Islamorada Sea Horse Off Shore Report – May 15, 2017

Off Shore Report: This past week has been what we hoped would happen off shore. Plenty of Mahi, for everyone fishing for them off shore of Islamorada. While many anglers have enjoyed catching Black Fin Tunas at the hump. Even more anglers have been smiling with their coolers full of Mahi. The Mahi like any other fish vary in size from school to school; however more big Mahi have been caught lately compared to previous months.

The 1st of May opened grouper season and lots of them have been caught around the nearby reefs. Some of the groupers have been caught deep drop style with electric reels in deeper water. What ever method plenty have been caught this month.

Yellow tail snapper have been caught in large quantities by commercial and recreational anglers. Popular reefs like “Davis Reef”, have been a local favorite hot spot. Giant Mutton Snappers have been caught regularly around the some wrecks around Conch Reef.

Off Shore Forecast: Look forward to more Mahi and Swordfish action further off Shore as we get closer to summer. Don’t be surprised if bigger tunas show up around the Islamorada hump. It has not been unusual for early summer large tunas to show up. One of the most productive methods of catching bigger Tunas has been with jigging spoons. Look for the tunas on your depth sounder half way up from the bottom when you are fishing the top of the Islamorada Hump.

Back Country Report: Sea Trout, Tarpon, Black Drum, Sharks, and Mangrove Snappers are all the rage in Florida Bay. Early morning Trout action on top water lures has been a blast near Sandy Key. Tarpon have been cooperating almost everywhere in the Islamorada area. Bridges, flats, channels, and around wrecks has very good. We hope they will stick around our area for a while.
